Use Complementary Colours in Your Quilts

Quilters understand the value of complementary colours in quilting. It is one of the most valuable tools in quilt making. Are you good at choosing colours?

Some quilters are very good at putting colours together for a quilt.  However, for many it’s more hit and miss.  Most importantly though, the right choice of colour can make your quilt pop and stand out from the rest.  Therefore, if you don’t have a talent for picking out colours, you may need some help. 

A colour wheel is the perfect tool for helping you decide.  In fact, you may be surprised at the colours that are suggested by the wheel.  You might never have thought of the combination yourself. 

In this excellent article from “Quilting Daily”, Jane Haworth shares her method for using complementary colours.  These are the colours that are opposite on the colour wheel.  Jane is an artist and a teacher and gives a very detailed explanation of the process.

Jane also shares photos of several of her two-colour art quilts.  These quilts are fantastic and will give you an idea of her “Power of Two” approach when it comes to choosing colours.
