Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts

a very large private exhibit of quilts all made in red and white

In 2011, the American Folk Art Museum exhibited a special collection of red and white quilts.ย  Read on to discover this magnificent collection.

If you are a quilter, then besides quilting you probably also enjoy visiting quilt exhibitions.ย  Furthermore, looking at all the beautiful quilts on display, a quilt exhibition is the perfect place to gather ideas.ย  For example, looking at other people’s quilts might suggest an idea for a pattern or a new colour combination.ย ย

Quilt Exhibitions

What is the largest quilt exhibition you have ever attended?ย  Two well-known annual exhibitions are The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham and the International Quilt Festival in Houston.ย  They both have many quilts on display, and they are all different.ย

I have been to the Festival of Quilts, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the exhibits.ย  I particularly remember several red and white quilts.ย  ย “Festival” w.as also a great opportunity to purchase quilting supplies.ย

In addition, I travelled to Den Haag with quilting friends many years ago for an international quilt exhibition and festival.ย  Moreover, it was also a wonderful opportunity to meet up with an old Dutch friend who lived there.ย  Fortunately, she had time to proudly show us around her city.

In addition to looking at quilts, we also visited several museums.ย  My favourite museum was the Mauritshuis, which houses Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Red and White Quilts

However, an exhibition from 2011 must hold the record for the most red and white quilts.ย  In that year, the American Folk Art Museum exhibited the private collection ofย  Joanna S. Rose.ย  Mrs. Rose called herself an “accumulator” rather than a collector.ย  Yet she had a collection of 651 red and white quilts!ย  Curiously, Mrs. Rose did not realise that she had that many!ย
ย
The quilts in this collection span the 19th century to the 21st century.ย  The title of this exhibition was “Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts”.ย ย
