The Perfect Portable

easy to transport Singer Featherweight

The Singer Featherweight has long been known as the “perfect portable”.  Why is that?  As its name signifies, it is lightweight and easy to carry.  Quilters love it mainly for this reason.  For example, they can take it easily to workshops and classes.  Another feature of this very popular machine is that it has only one stitch, the straight stitch.  Quilters rarely use any other type of stitch.

The Singer Featherweight is a lockstitch domestic machine manufactured from 1933 to 1968 by the Singer Manufacturing Company.  The typical early 20th century machine had a treadle which the user operated by foot.  Therefore, the electric Featherweight was a novelty and became very popular.

In fact, these vintage machines are still popular today.  Read more about this remarkable sewing machine in this article by Debi Warner for “Quilting Hub”.
