The rotary cutter is one of the most important tools used by modern quilters. Today’s quilter depends on its sharp, accurate cuts. But, do you know its history?
Before 1979, quilters used a sewing scissors and drawn templates to cut out fabric shapes. However, in order to make accurate cuts, quilters had to be very careful and cut slowly. As one can imagine, this was a time-consuming process.
Olfa introduced the rotary cutter in 1979. However, it was originally meant for garment making. But savvy quilters soon realized that it was a game changer for cutting fabrics to make quilts. Therefore, they soon adopted it as an important part of their toolbox.Â
I use an Olfa rotary cutter in my workroom. I would not use any other brand.Â
Read about its very interesting history in Quilting Daily.Â
