A Quilt in Quarantine is not a Happy Quilt!

We are very lucky to be living in the age of immunizations.  Back in my grandparents’ day and earlier, there were no vaccines to fight against many common diseases.  Quarantines were common.  Even a quilt in quarantine was possible!

Therefore, if someone in a household came down with a contagious disease, he/she had to be quarantined.  Sometimes, the other members of the household moved in with other relatives just to avoid the disease.  Everything and everyone in that household was in quarantine.  As a result, a quilt in quarantine was a distinct possibility.

Families had to place warning signs on the front of their houses to keep others from coming near.  Many diseases were life threatening, so this was a danger to the community.

What Happened to a Quilt in Quarantine?

Well, after the lifting of a quarantine, everything in the house had to be disinfected and scrubbed or washed.  For example, bedding, clothing, rugs, dishes were on the  cleaning/washing list.
