Crisp mornings and golden leaves signal the beginning of autumn, a season filled with fresh energy and new possibilities. The air carries a hint of change as children gather their school supplies and head back to the classroom buzzing with anticipation. Quilts become an essential part of the season, adding warmth and comfort to busy days and cooler nights. They blend comfort, style, and practicality for the start of the season.

Did you know that Martha Washington (1731-1802), wife of George Washington, was an avid quilter? There are only three surviving documented quilts made by Martha, and one of them is currently on display at Mt. Vernon, the former home of George and Martha Washington in Virginia. Not much is known about the details of Martha's quilting, but investigations continue hoping to reveal more.

Under my needle

Under my needle this month is the Songbirds Wall Hanging. This is a beautiful hanging featuring 15 different North American songbirds. The basic images come as a panel. After cutting them out, I encase them in a grid, add borders, quilt, add hanging corners and bind. It's a very popular product at RBQ. Look for it in the Shop soon.
